Maria Garcia Teutsch’s Chronicles of Violence is a short poem sequence best read in one sitting. Each poem, brief and brutal, makes a jagged imprint, but taken as a whole, the poems form a pattern of fierce survival against a backdrop of violence. The speakers’ voices here are individual; their responses to pain vary from whispered strength to furious fear, but Teutsch makes it clear that the endless war that unites and threatens her speakers is gendered and global. With quiet restraint and an eye for precise details Teutsch exemplifies the ways that violence against women is both personal and political. Chronicles of Violence devastates as its poems move from gritty sensory impressions to the soft promise of hope whispered in juxtaposed images of butchery and flight. Chronicles of Violence was first published by the Henry Miller Memorial Library.–Daniel Guerra
This book is dedicated to all women everywhere who have been and continue to be victims of the war machine. I was particularly driven to write this collection after receiving first hand accounts of the atrocities faced by the women who became the patients at Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, South KIvu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. All proceeds from the sales of Chronicles of Violence go to Panzi Hospital, DRC

My friend, Brandi Walker, volunteered there under Dr. Mukwege. My son and I got to meet Dr. Mukwege along with Eve Ensler when they toured in the United States. Last year Dr. Mukwege received the long overdue Nobel Peace Prize. His work humbles and inspires me everyday.– Maria
